Driving to a Smokies cabin in winter: do you need 4WD?

Usually, no. But “usually” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Here’s what winter really looks like around Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, which roads close, and the one question to ask your cabin host before you pick a car.

Every winter we get the same message: “We’re staying in a cabin near Gatlinburg in January. Do we need a four-wheel drive?” The honest answer depends far less on the national park than on the last half-mile of road up to your cabin. Here’s how to work it out.

What winter actually looks like here

Two very different climates sit a short drive apart. Down in the towns and valleys, the Park Service says snows of an inch or more only happen a few times each winter. Up high it’s another story: Newfound Gap averages 69 inches of snow a season, and snow can fall at high elevations any time from October through April.

So most winter days, the drive from Knoxville to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg is a normal drive. The trouble spots are the high mountain roads and the steep, curvy private roads that a lot of cabins sit on.

Which roads close in winter

Storm closures. The park’s main roads — Newfound Gap Road (US-441), Little River Road and the Cades Cove Loop — are open year-round, weather permitting. In practice, Newfound Gap Road often closes temporarily during winter storms because of snow and ice. If your plan is to drive over the mountains to Cherokee, check the road status the morning you go.

Seasonal closures. Some park roads shut for the whole winter no matter the weather. On the 2026 schedule:

  • Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road): open through November 29
  • Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail: open through November 29
  • Rich Mountain Road and Parson Branch Road: open through November 9

If one of those is on your list, go before the dates above.

❄️ Before every mountain drive: call (865) 436-1200 and press extension 631, or check @SmokiesRoadsNPS. It takes a minute and can save you a two-hour detour.

The real question: your cabin’s driveway

Cabins around Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Wears Valley and Sevierville are often up on ridges, on narrow private roads that can be steep, winding and sometimes gravel. Those roads aren’t always plowed or treated quickly after a storm. A light snow that barely touches the Parkway can make a steep driveway hard to get up — and harder to get down.

Your cabin company knows its roads better than anyone. Before you book a car, ask them:

  • Is the road to the cabin paved all the way, or is part of it gravel?
  • How steep is the driveway, and is there a sharp turn at the top or bottom?
  • Who plows or treats the road after snow, and how fast?
  • Do you recommend four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive in winter?
  • If the driveway ices over, is there somewhere lower to park?

If they say four-wheel drive is recommended, believe them and book accordingly. If they say any car is fine, it usually is.

Which of our cars to book

Ford F-150 4x4 pickup rental in Knoxville for a winter Smoky Mountains cabin trip
The 2019 Ford F-150 SuperCrew is the four-wheel-drive vehicle in our fleet.
  • Need four-wheel drive? Book the Ford F-150. It’s a 4x4 SuperCrew with room for five, plus a bed for the luggage and the groceries.
  • Normal winter trip, cabin on a paved road: any of our front-wheel-drive cars handles the main roads fine. The Accord Hybrid is the most comfortable and the cheapest to fuel.
  • Bigger group: our 7-seat SUVs are about seats and bags, not traction. The Telluride is front-wheel drive. If your cabin needs 4WD and you also need seven seats, call us before you book and we’ll talk it through honestly.

One thing worth saying plainly: four-wheel drive helps you get going on snow. It doesn’t help you stop or steer on ice. Driving slowly matters more than what’s under the car.

Winter mountain driving habits

  • Arrive in daylight. An unfamiliar cabin road is much easier the first time you can see it.
  • Fuel up and stock up in town. If weather moves in, you won’t want to go back down the mountain for groceries.
  • Download your maps. Cell service is patchy in the hills.
  • Stick to the roads your cabin host gave you. A GPS “shortcut” can put you on a steeper, narrower road than the main route.
  • Go down slowly, in a lower gear. The descent is where people get into trouble, not the climb.
  • Keep the basics in the car: water, a blanket, a phone charger and a little patience.

If the weather turns

If a storm is in the forecast for your arrival or departure day, message us through your booking. We know these roads, and we’ll tell you straight what we’d do. Flying in? Picking up at McGhee Tyson (TYS) gives you the most flexibility on timing. And if you’re planning a fall trip instead, here’s our guide to the best Smokies fall color drives.

Does Newfound Gap Road close in winter?

It is open year-round, weather permitting, but the National Park Service says Newfound Gap Road and other park roads are often temporarily closed during winter storms because of snow and ice.

Do you rent a 4x4 in Knoxville?

Yes. Our 2019 Ford F-150 SuperCrew is a four-wheel-drive pickup that seats five and can be picked up at McGhee Tyson Airport or in Knoxville. Our three-row SUVs are chosen for seats and space, not traction, so ask us before booking one for a cabin that needs 4WD.
