Choosing

Which car should you actually book?

Five vehicles is a small fleet on purpose. Here's the honest version of what each one is for — including when the answer is "not this one."

Book the Accord Hybrid if…

You're doing miles. It's the most-booked car we have and it isn't close, because the trips people take from Knoxville tend to involve driving: Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Cades Cove, the Foothills Parkway, a run over to Asheville. Over a week of that, the difference between a hybrid and something thirsty is real money — and the Accord is comfortable enough that four adults won't fall out about it on the way back. It's also the one we hand to guests on a monthly booking, for the same reason.

Skip it if you need to haul something, or you're parking downtown all week and would rather have something small.

Book the Elantra if…

You want the everyday-car sweet spot. It's the newest addition to the fleet — a 2020 compact sedan that does 40+ MPG on the highway, parks easily downtown, and starts cheaper per day than the Accord. For an airport pickup, a work week, or getting around Knoxville while your car's in the shop, it's the sensible answer.

Skip it if you're four adults with luggage heading into the mountains for a week — that's the Accord's job.

Book the Telluride if…

Everybody has to fit in one vehicle. It's our 7-seat SUV rental in Knoxville — a 2020 Kia Telluride with three real rows and enough space behind the back row for about three bags. A family of six heading to a Gatlinburg cabin, a group flying into McGhee Tyson, a wedding party running between venues, in-laws in town for a UT weekend: this is the one that means nobody takes a second car.

Skip it if there are four of you or fewer. At 23 MPG it costs real money over a week of mountain driving, and the Accord Hybrid does that trip better for less.

Book the F-150 if…

The load doesn't fit in a car. Mulch, a mattress, a dresser off Marketplace, a dump run, a UT dorm move-in. It's a proper half-ton pickup, 4WD, six seats, and it's the right answer for the jobs a box truck is overkill for. The full breakdown of what fits and how it compares to a U-Haul is on the truck rental page.

Skip it if you're mainly commuting. At 19 MPG a week of driving costs noticeably more than the Accord, and you'll feel it parking downtown.

Book the Kia Soul if…

You want the cheapest sensible option and you're mostly in town. It's easy to park around Cumberland Avenue, the Old City and the Fort, it's more spacious inside than it looks, and for a solo trip or a couple it does everything the Accord does for less. It's also the one to pick if you're flying in and just need wheels for two days.

Skip it if you've got four adults and luggage, or a week of mountain driving ahead.

Still not sure?

Tell us what you're actually doing on the trip and we'll tell you straight — including if the answer is a car we don't have. Call or text (865) 309-4897, or read how booking works first. If your car's in the shop and an insurer is involved, start with the replacement rental page instead; that one has its own paperwork.
